2018 Investigation of Compressive and Bending Behaviour of Egg-box Sandwich Panels

Composite sandwich structures have been increasingly used in civil, marine, and airplane structures due to their high bending stiffness to weight ratio. A number of core structures such as lattice, corrugated, foam, honeycomb core has been studied to improve the mechanical properties desired such as, bending rigidity [1], energy absorption capacity [2]. In this study, egg-box core structures were investigated in terms of bending stiffness and energy absorption under static loadings. Three different egg-box core were designed and manufactured. The shape of the core structures is represented in Figure 1 Vacuum infusion method was used to manufacture the core structures and the upper and the lower sheets. The components of the sandwich panels were adhered together using epoxy-based adhesive. Forming of the fabric sheets is one of the challenge during manufacturing of the complex core structures. Three different core designs were compared in terms of the formability during manufacturing. Images were captured from different contours of the structures using optical microscope to observe the defects such as fibre wrinkling. Failure modes of the core structures were examined for various core thickness under three-point bending test and compression tests. Interrupted test method was considered to characterize the failure modes.
